K-Fishing: The Quest for the Giant "Kraken" (East Sea Giant Octopus)

angler84 2026. 4. 14. 02:10

South Korea’s East Sea is famous for its crystal-clear waters and breathtaking scenery. But deep beneath those beautiful waves in the Gangwon-do province lies a legendary creature that every angler dreams of: the North Pacific Giant Octopus, known locally as Pi-muneo.

Fact Check: Does it really grow to 50kg?

Yes, it’s a fact! The North Pacific Giant Octopus (Enteroctopus dofleini) is the largest octopus species in the world. While the average catch in Korea is around 1–10kg, they can indeed grow up to 50kg (and some records globally even exceed 70kg!). In Korea, catching a 10kg+ monster earned it the nickname "The Kraken."

How to Catch a Giant in Korea

  • Location: Major ports in Gangwon-do such as Geojin, Sokcho, Jumunjin, and Gangneung.
  • Cost: A day on a charter boat typically costs around 100,000 KRW.
  • Season: From February to August. As the water warms up in summer, they move deeper—sometimes down to 100 meters!
  • Gear & Tackle:
    • Sinker: 110g to 190g (Size 30–50).
    • Lures: "Egi" (crown-hooked lures). We usually stack 3 Egis on one rig.
    • Strategy: You must stay on the bottom. Because of this, snags are frequent, so bring plenty of spare lures. Cheap Egis (300–600 KRW) work just fine!

The Rules of the Game

Fishing for Giant Octopus is a challenge of patience. Out of 10 people on a boat, a few might go home empty-handed ("Kkwang" in Korean).

  • Conservation: Anything under 600g must be released to protect the population.
  • The Sweet Spot: While the Kraken is the trophy, the 1–2kg size is considered the most delicious and tender.
  • The Trophy: Landing a 10kg+ "Kraken" will give you bragging rights for a lifetime. Imagine the photos!

K-Food: A Taste of the Deep

In Korea, octopus is a delicacy and even a traditional food used in ancestral rites in certain regions.

  • How to eat: It is usually blanched (Suk-hoe) or steamed. The texture is incredibly soft with a natural sweetness.
  • The Ultimate Meal: Imagine a whole 1kg octopus thrown into a steaming pot of Ramyeon. The broth becomes rich and savory—a taste you’ll never forget.
  • Cultural Experience: It might be exotic to some, but trying this K-Food is a must-experience for any traveler.

Beyond Fishing: Explore Gangwon-do

Don't just come for the fish! The Gangwon area is a traveler's paradise:

  • Yangyang: The surfing mecca of Korea.
  • Winter Sports: Home to world-class ski resorts.
  • Hiking: Stunning mountains like Seoraksan offer incredible views.
