The Heat Cannot Stop the Passion
August 7, 2025. The Korean summer is at its peak, with scorching heat dominating the peninsula. However, for big game anglers, the temperature is just a number. No matter how brutal the sun is, the lure of a massive Yellowtail Kingfish (Hiramasa) exploding on the surface is enough to drive us out onto the water.
The night before the trip is always like a warrior preparing for battle. We double-check our tackle, replace old shock leaders, and tighten every knot. In the world of popping—where repetitive heavy casting is the norm—there is no room for equipment failure.

Launching into the Blue
- Tide: 7th Tide (7 Mul)
- Current Strength: 90%
- Moon Phase: Near Full Moon
- Location: Yeongmok Port, Taean Peninsula (West Coast)
We arrived at the port at 5:00 AM. While waiting for sunrise, we did a final gear check. As the first light touched the horizon, we reported our departure to the Coast Guard and began the 80-minute run to the offshore points. The atmosphere on the boat was electric, with everyone sharing their goals for the day.

The Strategy: From Jigging to Popping
At the first point, the current was moving beautifully. The fish finder showed thick clouds of baitfish, though there were no visible "boilings" on the surface. We started with jigging first to see if the predators were holding deep.
Almost immediately, one of my teammates hooked up! Landing a fish right at the start takes the pressure off. With the "skunk" avoided, it was time to experiment. We landed a steady stream of Kingfish and Spanish Mackerel.
By 10:00 AM, the current slackened, and the bait disappeared from the screen. We moved to a high underwater pinnacle where baitfish often seek refuge. Again, jigging produced a few more fish before the midday lull set in.

The Main Event: Surface Explosion
As the tide turned to the flood tide (Deulmul), we spotted a massive disturbance in the distance. It wasn’t a chaotic frenzy, but large fish were breaching every 3–5 seconds. The sheer size of the splashes told us these were the ones we were looking for.
We approached stealthily. Cast! Retrieve! BITE! A powerful Kingfish hammered the lure. After a grueling fight against a fish that refused to give up, we finally had it in the net. At that moment, the exhaustion from the heat and the sweat-soaked clothes didn't matter. The thrill of the catch reset our stamina completely.

Guide to Big Game Fishing in Korea
If you are an international angler looking for a new challenge, Korea offers world-class Yellowtail Kingfish (Hiramasa) and Amberjack fishing.
Seasonal Breakdown
- South Coast & Jeju Island: The season is long, with popping action starting as early as March to May.
- West Coast (Taean/Oeyeondo): The season is shorter, typically starting in July and wrapping up by October.
Recommended Gear (Heavy Popping)
- Reel: 14000 class spinning reel (high gear recommended).
- Line: PE #6 to #10 braided line.
- Rod: 8.3ft to 8.8ft dedicated popping rod.
- Lures: 16cm to 22cm diving pencils or poppers.
- Shock Leader: 100lb to 170lb. (We use heavier leaders here because Korean Kingfish are notorious for diving straight into sharp underwater rocks/pinnacles).
Why Korea?
The current Korean record for Yellowtail Kingfish stands at a staggering 163cm.
For travelers, Jeju Island is the premier destination. It combines breathtaking scenery with incredible fishing infrastructure.
- Cost: A full day of charter fishing costs around 170,000 to 180,000 KRW (approx. $130–$140 USD).
- Rentals: If you can't bring your heavy rod tubes, many boats offer high-quality gear rentals for about 50,000 KRW.
Korea is a hidden gem for big game anglers. Whether it's the rugged West Coast or the beautiful Jeju Island, the adrenaline of a summer popping trip is something you have to experience at least once.
